Longtime East Sonora resident Russell James Winter, 84, passed away, Oct. 10, 2022, in his home surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his spouse of 50 years, Peggy Winter; children Jeff (Laurie) Winter, of San Pablo, California, Bev (John) Sousa, of Soulsbyville, and Mark (Kris) Kraft of East Sonora; son-in-law Jim Wagner, of Oakdale; his grandchildren, Bailey and Blake Winter, of San Pablo, Austin and Morgan Sous,a of Soulsbyville, Erika (Bobby) Caldera, of East Sonora, Danika (Troy) Batastini, of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, Trevor (Rachael) Smith, of Livermore, California, Hili (Fergus) MacDaied, of Ireland, and Shana Smith, of Washington; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Bruning, of Sonora; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, James “Al” Winter; mother, Lucille Winter; and daughter, Debra Wagner, in 2021.
Russell was born on July 8, 1938, and graduated from Oxnard Union High School in 1956. He moved to Jamestown in 1967. After 36 years, he retired from Sierra Conservation Center in 1993, and he and Peggy traveled all over the United States and into Canada and Mexico, making lifelong friends along the way. We know he will now be forever playing card games!
A cremation has taken place, and no services are planned.
