Graveside Service

John Robert Holland left this earth for his Heavenly resting place on Sept. 17, 2022. He passed away at his home in Sonora, which was his wish, with his devoted wife by his side.
John was a retired law enforcement officer beginning his career with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1969 as a patrol officer, then became a SWAT Team member. He later served as a deputy on the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office’s Tri-County Narcotics Enforcement Team, and retired in 1998.
During his law enforcement career, he was able to obtain his Master of Arts Degree in criminal justice, which benefited him in starting a second career in August 1998 teaching administration of justice at Butte College in Oroville. His students enjoyed hearing stories about his career in law enforcement and appreciated his spending countless hours guiding them into their own careers. He retired from teaching in May 2017.
John was born Sept. 9, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, graduated from Santa Ana High School, and lived with his parents Ray and Dorothy Holland. When he was a teenager, he loved to go to the beach every day that he could to surf. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends around the country on cruises, in the RV, and on his Harley.
John is survived by his wife, Francine Mendenhall; his sister, Melody; three children; five grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nephews, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. He will be remembered for his sense of honor and loyalty to his family, friends, God and country. Also, for his sense of humor and practical jokes he played on family and friends.
Thank you to the wonderful nurses and staff from hospice who took great pride in caring for John in his last few weeks. Thank you, family and friends, for the love and support through your cards, flowers and kind words.
Rest in peace and comfort in our blessed Savior’s arms. You are loved and will be in our hearts forever.
