Fraud Alert

The Cemetery and Funeral Bureau (CFB) has learned of a recent scam targeting consumers of cemetery- and funeral-related services.

In this scheme targeted at loved ones that recently lost someone, a caller falsely identifies themselves as an employee of a funeral home (a licensee) and may request payment or ask for personal information about the decedent such as Medicare details.

Callers may be “spoofing” funeral home/licensee telephone numbers to make the calls appear to be coming from the business.

If you receive a call from an individual claiming to be a funeral home employee who is attempting to gather personal and financial information, please consider the following:

  • Refuse payment. Never disclose banking or credit card numbers without first taking steps to verify that the person requesting the information has a legitimate need for it.
  • Never disclose personal information to the caller such as Social Security Numbers or date of birth.
  • Take down the caller’s information (including name, title, phone number, and email address), let them know you will follow-up directly with the funeral home/business, and end the call.
  • You may also consider ending the call without explanation if it appears suspicious or to be a scam.

Consumers are reminded to not disclose any personal information, i.e. social security numbers, date of births, or credit/debit card numbers, without first taking steps to verify the identity of the person requesting the information, and that they have a legitimate need for it.

Consumers are encouraged to contact the Federal Trade Commission or local law enforcement if they believe they have been a target of a scam. Please note these type of scam calls do not fall under the jurisdiction of CFB.
